Free MEDDPICC template
A MEDDPICC template
that shows the gaps.
One branch per letter. Write what you know, how you know it, and the next step. The weak spots show up in colour.
Use it free — no card, no trial →
- Free forever — not a trial
- Up to 10 maps, kept for good
- Every export included
Free has no end date — upgrade only if you outgrow 10 maps. Opens with all eight MEDDPICC branches laid out, each with evidence, confidence, next step and owner fields.
One branch per letter. Metrics, economic buyer, criteria, process, paper, pain, champion, competition. Two decision makers? Two topics, not a crammed cell.
Evidence, not hope. Every item has an evidence field and a confidence of high, medium or low. The map colours itself by it, so the gaps stand out.
Bring it to the deal review. Each gap carries a next step and an owner. Export the map as a PDF, an image or slides for your manager.
How to qualify a deal with MEDDPICC, step by step
MEDDIC was built at PTC in the 1990s; Jack Napoli and Dick Dunkel are credited with it. It is a checklist for complex B2B deals: do you know why the customer would buy, who signs, and how? MEDDPICC adds two letters — Paper process and Competition. Fill it in early, then update it after every call.
- Name the deal at the centre. The account, what you are selling and the value — "Halden Freight: route planning, $72k". One map per deal.
- Start with pain and metrics. What hurts, in the customer's words, and the number that would prove it fixed. No pain, no deal; no metric, no business case.
- Find the economic buyer. The person who can say yes to the money, even if everyone else says no. Write the name. "Finance" is not a name.
- Map how they decide. Decision criteria: what they will judge you on. Decision process: the steps and dates to a choice. Paper process: security, legal and purchasing after the yes.
- Test your champion. A champion has power, wants you to win, and acts on it. Give them a test — book a meeting with the buyer — and record whether they passed.
- Name the competition. Other vendors, an internal build, or doing nothing. Write why each could win.
- Mark confidence and act on the lows. Rate each item high, medium or low and say how you know. Every low gets a next step and an owner before the next review.
Worked example: a fleet software deal
A rep is selling route-planning software to a mid-size freight company. The deal sits at the centre; each letter is a branch. This is the map shown above.
- 📊 Metrics: cut empty miles by 12%Evidence: Their Q2 fleet report · Confidence: High
- 💼 Economic buyer: Maria Lind, COOEvidence: Named by champion; not met yet · Confidence: Medium · Next step: Ask Jonas for a 20-minute intro · Owner: Alex
- ✅ Decision criteria
- Works with their telematicsEvidence: Demo on their data, 3 Oct · Confidence: High
- Live in under 90 daysConfidence: Medium
- Under $80k a yearEvidence: Said once on a call · Confidence: Low · Next step: Confirm budget with the COO · Owner: Alex
- 🧭 Decision process
- Pilot in two depots, NovemberConfidence: High
- Steering group decides 9 DecEvidence: Jonas, call on 14 Oct · Confidence: Medium
- 📝 Paper process: security, then legalEvidence: Legal takes 3–4 weeks · Confidence: Low · Next step: Send the security pack this week · Owner: Priya (SE)
- 😖 Pain: trucks run too many empty milesEvidence: Jonas, discovery call · Confidence: High
- Board flagged fuel overspendConfidence: Medium
- 🏆 Champion: Jonas, head of operationsEvidence: Shared the internal fuel report · Confidence: Medium
- Test: will he book the COO?Next step: Ask on Thursday's call · Owner: Alex
- ⚔️ Competition
- Add-on from their current TMSEvidence: Cheaper; weaker routing · Confidence: Medium
- Do nothing: keep the spreadsheetConfidence: Low
Read the lows: the budget, the paper process and the competition from doing nothing. Each already has a next step and an owner — that is the agenda for the next deal review.

Make a MEDDPICC deal map in Atlas Red for this opportunity: [account, product, value, and my call notes]. Use the MEDDPICC template, put each fact under its letter with the evidence, and mark anything I have not confirmed as low confidence.
You get the same template, filled in, in your own account. Fix what it got wrong by hand. Or ask for another round.
Questions people ask
What does MEDDPICC stand for?
Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Paper process, Identify pain, Champion and Competition. Each letter is a question you should be able to answer about a deal before you forecast it. Some teams write the I as "implicate the pain".
MEDDIC vs MEDDPICC — what is the difference?
MEDDIC is the original six letters, built at PTC in the 1990s. MEDDICC adds Competition. MEDDPICC adds Paper process too: the security, legal and purchasing steps that turn a verbal yes into a signed contract. Use MEDDIC for simpler deals and MEDDPICC when procurement and rival vendors can stall you. The template has all eight branches; delete the ones you don't use.
Is this MEDDPICC template free?
Yes. It is part of Atlas Red's Free edition: up to 10 maps, kept with no end date, every export included, no credit card. Pro is a one-time $99 payment for unlimited maps.
Can I use it as a MEDDIC template?
Yes. Delete the Paper process and Competition branches and you have a MEDDIC map. Keep the fields: evidence and confidence matter more than the number of letters.
Can I export the deal map to PowerPoint, Word or my CRM?
There is no PowerPoint, Word or CRM export. Every edition exports PDF, PNG, JPEG and SVG images, slides, an interactive web page, Markdown, OPML and plain text. Markdown keeps your fields as "Label: value" lines and pastes into Word, Google Docs or a CRM notes field.
Can ChatGPT or Claude fill in MEDDPICC from my call notes?
They can draft it. Connect Atlas Red to ChatGPT or Claude. Paste your notes and ask for a MEDDPICC map. It builds the map from this template in your workspace. Check every item yourself — an assistant can't tell a real champion from a friendly contact.
How often should I update a MEDDPICC map?
After every meaningful call and before every deal review. The value is in the changes: a champion who passed a test, a buyer you met, a new paper step. One map per deal, kept up to date, beats a fresh form each quarter.
