Free essay and research paper outline template
An essay outline template
you can rearrange before you write.
Put the thesis in the middle. Hang every paragraph off it, with its evidence and source. Drag parts until the argument holds, then export Markdown.
Use it free — no card, no trial →
- Free forever — not a trial
- Up to 10 maps, kept for good
- Every export included
Free has no end date — upgrade only if you outgrow 10 maps. It opens with a thesis, an introduction, three body paragraphs, a counterargument and a conclusion.
See the whole argument. Every paragraph is a branch of the thesis. A weak branch shows before you write it.
Drag to restructure. Move a point to another paragraph. Swap two paragraphs. The outline stays tidy.
Export and write. Export Markdown and paste it into Word or Google Docs. Your sources and word targets come along.
How to outline an essay, step by step
An outline is the plan of an essay. It lists the claim, the reasons and the proof, in order. Writing from one is faster than writing from a blank page. It also shows a gap while it is cheap to fix.
- Turn the prompt into a question. "Discuss school start times" becomes "Should schools start later?" A question needs an answer. That answer is your thesis.
- Write the thesis in one sentence. A thesis is the claim the essay defends. It must be arguable. "Sleep matters" is a fact. "Schools should start at 8:30 or later" is a thesis.
- Find three reasons. Each reason becomes a body paragraph. Write it as a topic sentence: the one claim that paragraph proves.
- Back each reason with evidence. Add a fact, a study or a quote under each reason. Note the source in its field. Then add a line of analysis: why it proves your point.
- Answer the best objection. State the strongest case against you, and reply to it. Readers trust an essay that faces its critics.
- Set word targets and order. Split your word count across the parts. Drag paragraphs until the strongest one sits where you want it.
- Export and write. Export the outline as Markdown. Paste it into your document. Write one branch at a time and mark it drafted.
Worked example: should schools start later?
A student writes a 1,500-word argumentative essay. The thesis sits at the centre. Each body paragraph holds its evidence, its source and a line of analysis. This is the map shown above.
- 🎯 Thesis: start at 8:30 or laterStatus: Revised
- 🚪 IntroductionWord target: 150 · Status: Drafted
- Hook: a 7:20 bell for a 16-year-old
- Background: teen sleep runs late
- 1️⃣ Body 1: teen body clocks run lateWord target: 350 · Status: Drafted
- Evidence: pediatricians back 8:30Source: American Academy of Pediatrics, 2014
- Analysis: early bells fight biology
- 2️⃣ Body 2: later starts mean more sleepWord target: 350 · Status: Idea
- Evidence: Seattle students slept longerSource: Dunster et al., Science Advances, 2018
- Analysis: rested students learn more
- 3️⃣ Body 3: safer teen driversWord target: 350 · Status: Idea
- Evidence: fewer crashes after a changeSource: Wahlstrom et al., 2014
- Analysis: tired drivers react slower
- ⚖️ Counterargument: buses and sportsWord target: 150 · Status: Idea
- Rebuttal: stagger the bus routes
- 🏁 ConclusionWord target: 150 · Status: Idea
- Restate thesis, ask the board to act
Look at the word targets. They add up to 1,500. Body 2 and Body 3 are still ideas, so the student knows where the next evening goes. If Body 3 proves weak, it drags under Body 2 as a second point.

Questions people ask
What goes in an essay outline?
A thesis, an introduction, the body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a topic sentence, evidence and analysis. An argumentative essay adds a counterargument and your reply. The classic five-paragraph essay has three body paragraphs. Longer essays add more.
How do I write a research paper outline?
Start from your research question. A common research paper outline runs: introduction, literature review, methods, results, discussion, conclusion. Humanities papers often argue by theme instead. Rename the template's branches to match. Put each source in the Source field, so you can find it again when you cite.
How is a thesis outline different?
A thesis outline plans chapters, not paragraphs. A typical one runs: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion. Each chapter becomes a branch, and its sections hang under it. Check your department's guide. Many set the chapter order.
Is there a free research paper outline generator?
ChatGPT and Claude can act as one. Connect Atlas Red to ChatGPT or Claude and give it your topic. It builds the outline from this template in your account. Check every source it names. An assistant can invent a citation that looks real.
Is this essay outline template free?
Yes. It is part of Atlas Red's Free edition. You get up to 10 maps, kept with no end date, every export, and no credit card. Pro is a one-time $99 payment for unlimited maps.
Can I export my outline to Word or Google Docs?
Yes, through Markdown. There is no Word file, but Markdown pastes into Word or Google Docs. Fields come along as "Label: value" lines. Every edition also exports PDF, PNG, slides, OPML and plain text.
Can I turn notes I already have into an outline?
Yes. Atlas Red imports Markdown, OPML and plain text as a map. Paste a rough list, then drag the points into place. Your old headings become branches.
Outline in a mind map or in Word: which is better?
Word is better for the final text. A map is better for the plan. You see every paragraph at once and drag them into a new order. Many writers outline in a map, then export Markdown and write in Word.
