The short answer
Pick Miro if the team needs one canvas for workshops, diagrams and planning, and mind maps are a small part of it.
Pick MindMeister if mind maps are the main job: a tool built only for them, imports from MindManager, XMind and FreeMind, and Word and PowerPoint export on paid plans.
On price, MindMeister Personal is about $80 a year and Miro Starter $96 per member. Both charge per user. Neither free plan exports a usable file.

Which one fits you
Choose Miro if
- Mind maps are one part of broader team work on a board.
- You want sticky notes, flowcharts and diagrams in the same place.
- You want desktop apps for Windows and macOS.
- You need a large template and integration library.
Choose MindMeister if
- Mind maps are the main thing you make.
- You want map-shaped exports — Word, PowerPoint, outline, FreeMind.
- You want to import maps from MindManager, XMind or FreeMind.
- You want AI map drafting without a credit budget (beta, 5 a day).
Moving maps between them
- Miro → MindMeister: Miro exports boards only as images and PDF. Copy the map's text and rebuild it.
- MindMeister → Miro: from a paid MindMeister plan, export an outline and paste it into Miro AI. Miro does not import mind-map files.
Before you commit to either, check the free plan's export. A map you cannot export stays tied to the subscription.
A third option: pay once
Atlas Red is ours. It is a dedicated mind mapper in the browser, sold for $99 once, with updates included and no renewal. The free edition keeps 10 maps for good and exports every format — PDF, PNG, Markdown, OPML, XMindMark and more. It opens .xmind and FreeMind files directly, and ChatGPT or Claude can build maps in it through a free MCP server and ChatGPT plugin.
Where it loses: no live co-editing (maps are shared read-only), no native desktop or mobile apps, and AI import of photos and PDFs costs credits. If those matter, pick from the two above.
Questions people ask

Which is cheaper, Miro or MindMeister?
MindMeister, slightly: Personal is €6 a month billed yearly (about $80 a year, excluding VAT) against Miro Starter at $8 per member a month ($96 a year). Both charge per user, so team costs grow the same way. Prices read 28 October 2026.
Can I export from the free plans?
Not usefully. MindMeister Free cannot export or print since June 2026. Miro Free exports low-resolution board images only.
Can I move a mind map from Miro to MindMeister?
